Abraham Etungat is an accomplished Inuit artist from Amadjuak, Nunavut, who spent the first half of his life living a traditional Inuit nomadic lifestyle. In the 1950's, he moved to Kinngait (Cape Dorset) where he began to pursue carving. Etungat’s experience and knowledge as a carver were later shared with both his daughter, Iqaluk Qatsiya, and his grandson Tutiya Qatsiya; also both professional carvers.
Etungat is best known for his bird figures with their wings often upstretched in a distinctive style – as in a well-known work of his, Bird of Spring, which was reproduced in bronze and is on permanent display at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The work was also recreated through a commission by the Devonian Group, a charitable foundation based in Calgary that underwrites public art installations, parks, and historic preservation projects. Four large public works were commissioned at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax, Connaught Park in Calgary, at Robson Square in Vancouver, and on the campus of Ryerson University in Toronto. His work has been exhibited within Canada and internationally - from The Winnipeg Art Gallery to the Heard Museum in Arizona with his work now showcased in countless permanent collections. In 1978 he was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
