Lillian Freiman (1908-1986) was a Canadian painter. She was born in Guelph, Ontario, and studied art in Montreal and France before settling in New York City.
Freiman’s artistic influence came from Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec while she was living in Paris. She was known for working in mixed media and experimenting with multiple mediums - mostly oil and pastel, capturing every day people - primarily women and while she was living in Paris and Brittany, she often used the faces of Bretons as the focus of her work. Other subjects she explored in er career were of bird cages, orchestras and musicians.
Freiman’s works are held in collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, the McMaster Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Canada.
The subject in this artwork, Bambi Hellmuth, was the wife of Canadian painter George Broomfield.
